in 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, somalia s authoritarian ruler siad barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country, known today as somaliland, in response to agitations for independence. the bombing leveled the entire city. barre targeted radio hargeisa to prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize a resistance. with the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated vanguards of somali culture knew the archives, containing over half a century of somali music had to be preserved. thousands upon thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from the soon-to-be targeted buildings. they were dispersed to neighboring countries like djibouti and ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to withstand even the most powerful airstrikes.

with fbnm now celebrating their fifth year of operation, lorenzo has marked the occasion by assembling his biggest project to date – an impeccably curated collection of obscure italian production music circa 1974 - 1985. the project, nearly a year in the making, has been very close to lorenzo s heart – beginning unexpectedly in the record fairs of buenos aires and leading him on several trips to rome and milan, tracking down the original musicians and licensors.

shadow play, the brand new label owned by parisian artist le loup and his partner pura, drops its second release courtesy of the bossman himself alongside chris carrier. the two men got together in the studio and cooked up some tasty goodness. the first of four tracks on this release is the intergalactic opus phoenix lights , which works off serene pads that transport you out into the cosmos, along with a warm, soothing bassline and electronic chirps and bleeps. research programm (outro) takes us into more obscure realms, as chris carrier and le loup sample a scientific vocal and create a mesmerising bed of sounds underneath it. on the flip we kick off with clouds reflection , another track which features a sample from an old instructional video. this track has minimal composition, with dreamy astral pads, shuffling beats and a grumbling low end. in the second half chris and le loup introduce more twinkling fx, to engage and hypnotise you... to bring the ep to a close we re presented with v-shape , which begins with a layer of clever drum programming aimed straight at the hips. once you re moving get ready for the juicy bassline, and a sultry top end that grips you and gripping progression. the perfect to end an utterly fresh ep..

adballons (made-up word from ”advertising balloon”) was a duo formed in tokyo and active only between 1986-88. equipped with some gear (casio cz-5000, teisco s-110f, roland mc-202, roland tr-909, korg kpr-77) and influenced by the music of d.a.f, kosmonautentraum, tommi stumpff, propaganda, the flowerpot men, cassandra complex, this heat, the pop group, spk and laibach, they released just one 7” in 1987 and played some shows in local clubs before disappear and become part of the obscure and inscrutable japanese underground scene. limited to 270 copies on 10” vinyl including the four original studio. everything remastered from the original reel-to-reel tape. each copy comes with a obi strip, an insert with some photos/lyrics/credits and a numbered card.
